Jaguar has formally confirmed the name of the ambitious all-new electric GT car that will spearhead a fresh era for the iconic British marque, the Jaguar Type 01.
The moniker – which Jaguar says combines nods to the past while forging into the future – will be affixed to its much-vaunted comeback model, a luxury four-door grand tourer due to go on sale in 2027.
While we are still a few months away from a formal unveiling in production trim, the Type 01 has been previewed by the Type 00 concept car that made its first appearance in 2024.
Revealed as a precursor to what will be a comprehensive rebrand and reboot of the manufacturer, the Type 00 showcases an entirely new design direction for the firm and is expected to significantly influence the final Type 01 product.
Jaguar itself describes the Type 01 has having an ‘exuberant modernist design’, while its ‘pioneering technology and instinctive driving dynamics will underpin future Jaguar models’.
Why the Jaguar Type 01?
According to the manufacturer, the Type 01 name ‘unites the brand’s history of innovation in design, technology and performance with the most advanced Jaguar ever’.
Indeed, ‘Type’ is historically associated with Jaguar through famed models like the E-Type, but ‘0’ reflects zero emissions and ‘1’ stands for the first of a new generation.
Having focused on premium saloons and SUVs in recent years, the Type 01 marks a fresh chapter in Jaguar’s story that takes it further upmarket with a halo model that will set the groundwork for future electric models.
More details about the Type 01 will become clearer as it nears production, though Jaguar states it will offer more than 1000PS (around 986bhp) and generate over 1,300Nm of torque from its tri-motor technology.
While no date has been set for a formal launch, Jaguar confirms a Type 01 prototype will appear at the Monaco E-Prix – where the manufacturer competes in Formula E – wearing a distinctive camouflage wrap later this month.
