Motability Scheme customers who are renewing their car lease may now be offered a short extension before ordering their next vehicle.
The extension is optional, and customers can still order their next vehicle as normal if they'd prefer.
What is the lease extension option?
The Motability Scheme is introducing a short lease extension for customers who are coming to the end of their current car lease.
Eligible customers will be contacted directly by email or letter with details of their extension options.
Choosing to extend is entirely optional.
Why is the Motability Scheme introducing this option?
Recent years have brought disruption to the car market, including the impact of the pandemic and ongoing supply chain challenges.
During this time, many customers extended their leases while waiting for new vehicles to become available.
This has resulted in more leases than usual reaching their end date at the same time.
To help manage this and give customers greater flexibility, the Motability Scheme is offering some renewing customers the chance to extend their current lease for a short period.
Lease extension details
How long can customers extend for?
Eligible customers may be offered either a nine-month or 15-month extension. The Motability Scheme will confirm the exact length available by email or letter.
Will lease terms change?
No. Current lease terms stay the same throughout the extension period.
Can customers already in an extension extend again?
No. Customers currently in a lease extension cannot extend their lease a second time.
Who is eligible?
This option is only available to car customers renewing their Motability Scheme lease from 1st July 2026.
Customers with a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle or a Powered Wheelchair or Scooter are not eligible for this lease extension option.
