Sunderland Look Forwards After Double Disappointment
Sunderland interim head coach Mike Dodds preferred to look to the positives despite the Vertu Motors-backed side sliding to defeat against two of the EFL Championship’s promotion-chasing teams.
The Black Cats headed for Norwich to kick off the month of March against the Canaries and in a first half lacking many clear cut chances, Borja Sainz had a shot well saved by Antony Patterson in the Sunderland goal as both sides chased the opener.
Just after the break, Jack Stacey hit the bar with a cross that almost caught Patterson out, with the visitors continuing to fight to keep Norwich at bay.
A snap shot from Gabriel Sara forced a smart save from Patterson before Sunderland finally had a decent chance at the other end; Abdoullah Ba weaving his way into the box before hitting a shot off the woodwork.
Ten minutes from the end, Norwich finally managed to break the Sunderland resistance as a ball into the box fell to Josh Sargent, who turned his man before lashing a shot beyond Patterson to secure the points.
League leaders Leicester then arrived at the Stadium of Light for a game that would ultimately be decided by an early goal from Jamie Vardy, with the ex-England international heading beyond Patterson after 13 minutes to get the winner.
Sunderland had chances to draw level but now sit tenth in the standings, ten points off the play-off places.
