The All-New Toyota Yaris Has Been Awarded A 5 Star NCAP Safety Rating
The latest and greatest Toyota Yaris arrived just last month. Already, it has been awarded an impressive solid five-star rating, after a multitude of rigorous Euro NCAP crash and safety tests.
This may not surprise anyone, as Toyota have a great history of achieving high marks in past reports. This result comes after the same five-stars were awarded to the 2019 Corolla and RAV4.
The all-new Toyota Yaris is a practical small city car that combines great comfort, efficiency and performance.
The incredibly popular Yaris comes with a variety of advanced technology and is impressively built, with features and finishes that make it great value for money. You can learn more about the all-new Toyota Yaris, here.
Importantly, the 2020 Toyota Yaris comes well-equipped with active safety tech as standard, and more systems are available to make the popular family car as prepared as possible for compromising situations.
The Euro NCAP
The European New Car Assessment Programme is an independent European car safety performance assessment programme. The Euro NCAP is designed to put a car through its paces, so that drivers may choose a car safe for them and their family, with assistance features that have been impartially tried and tested.
Focused on four key areas, the Euro NCAP report gathers an overall safety rating from various crash and safety tests performed on the car in question. The 2020 Toyota Yaris endured several crash scenarios - frontal, rear and side tests.
The latest Yaris survived thorough crash testing, using dummies linked-up to provide impact readings, for analysis on both Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection respectively.
The Yaris also underwent Vulnerable Road User safety tests, such as detecting and stopping for unexpected pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition, the Toyota Yaris’ Safety Assistance features were assessed, such autobraking and Lane Assist.
The Results:
Adult Occupant Protection
The 2020 Toyota Yaris scored really high marks during Adult Occupant Protection tests: averaging at 86%.
The Yaris's modest weight and benign front structure did not pose a high risk to the occupants of a colliding vehicle in a frontal offset impact.
The passenger compartment of the Yaris remained stable in a test of a front-end crash. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger.
Toyota showcased how a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. Protection of the chest was good for both driver and passenger.
In both the side barrier crash test and the pole/bollard style impact crash test, protection of all critical body areas was good. The Yaris is equipped with centre airbags to protect against occupant-to occupant interaction in side impacts. This system worked well in Euro NCAP's test, with good protection of the head for both front seat occupants.
Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injury in the event of a rear-end collision.
The Toyota compact car’s emergency braking (AEB) system performed really well in tests of its functionality at the low speeds, typical of city driving at which many whiplash injuries occur. Whiplash was avoided in almost all scenarios.
The Yaris is equipped as standard with a multi-collision braking system, which applies the brakes immediately after an impact to prevent the vehicle from being involved in secondary impacts.
The all-new Toyota Yaris also has an advanced e-Call system which, in the event of an accident, automatically sends a message to the emergency services, giving the car's location.
Child Occupant Protection
The new Toyota Yaris also achieved well through the Child Occupant protection tests, scoring a high 81%.
When the Yaris was involved in front and side collisions, protection of both the 6 and 10-year old dummies was great for all critical areas of the body – the Toyota Yaris scored maximum points in this part of the assessment.
For families, the Yaris is designed to accommodate all universal child restraint systems, especially since the front passenger airbag is automatically disabled when a rearward-facing child restraint is put in that seating position.
Clear information given to the driver regarding the status of the airbag and safety systems were awarded with high marks too.
Vulnerable Road User Protection
It was found that the all-new Toyota Yaris achieved very well in the Vulnerable Road User safety tests, gaining 78%.
If a pedestrian was to be hit, the Yaris offered good protection to the head, over nearly the whole surface of the bonnet.
The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians' legs and protection of the pelvis was good at most test positions.
The Yaris’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system was also able to detect Vulnerable Road Users – the Toyota Yaris identified pedestrians and reacted accordingly.
The AEB system performed well, and in most scenarios, accidents were subsequently completely avoided or eased so the impact was not as damaging.
Safety Assistance
The safety features included in the 2020 Yaris scored an impressive 85% and the NCAP testing looked at the following:
- Lane Assist
- Speed Assistant System
- Smart Brake Support
- Seat Belt Reminder
Most whiplash injuries occur at in built-up, urban areas at low speeds – despite this, the Smart Brake Support system in the Toyota Yaris avoided all potential collisions that may haves occurred in the test’s scenarios, eradicating any potential whiplash injuries or accidents.
The report indicates that the standard-fit Smart Brake Support performed well.
The NCAP report declared that the Yaris’s lane assistance system helps to prevent inadvertent drifting out lane, by warning the driver and gently applying some corrective steering.
The system also intervenes more aggressively in some more critical situations, making driving at high speeds safer on motorways.
The report recognised the Toyota Yaris’s camera and digital mapping system that is used to determine the local speed limit - this information is presented to the driver who can choose to let the set limiter adapt the speed accordingly.
The car has a seatbelt reminder system as standard for front and rear seats,
As well as a seatbelt reminder for front and rear seats, the Yaris has a driver monitoring system which uses steering and camera inputs to identify whether the driver is alert and focussed on the driving task or is impaired through fatigue or other factors. The system warns the driver if impaired driving is detected.
The Yaris ensures the best safety is afforded to its driver and their family.
