In a 2019 safety test, the effectiveness of the Toyota Corolla s in-built safety features was tested, measuring the level of protection in the event of front, side and rear-end collisions.
Passenger protection
During the frontal offset test, the Corolla displayed adequate airbag protection, showing no hazard to the test dummies. A similar level of protection was witnessed for different sized occupants and those sat in different positions. The full-width rigid barrier tests showed a good to adequate protection to the critical body areas, and there s good protection against whiplash injuries for the front and rear seats in the event of rear-end collision. During testing, the autonomous emergency braking system (AEB) performed well.
Children
When performed on 6 and 10-year dummies, the frontal offset test showed good and adequate protection for all the critical body regions and maximum points were scored in the side barrier tests. The Corolla allows for the front passenger airbag to be disabled to install a rearward-facing child restraint, and clear information is provided to the driver on the status of the airbags.
Pedestrians and vulnerable road users
During tests on the protection to pedestrians and vulnerable road users, the Corolla s bumper and bonnet provided good protection for stricken pedestrians and the AEB performed well in its detection of pedestrians and cyclists.
