Volvo Electrification Explained
We understand the world of hybrid and electric vehicles can seem confusing. Here we answer the most common questions about Volvo's electrified range of vehicles.
Mild Hybrids
What is a mild hybrid?
A traditional combustion engine supported by a small electric motor.
How are they charged?
They are charged through energy recovered from regenerative braking and coasting. This means that you don’t need to plug them in.
Can they run solely on electric power?
No, the electric motor provides support to improve the engine’s efficiency, but the engine still runs on fuel.
Plug-in Hybrid
What is a plug-in hybrid?
A traditional combustion engine combined with a battery-powered electric motor.
How are they charged?
The battery can be charged by being plugged in, through regenerative braking, or from the engine. This means you can switch between power sources during your drive.
Can they run solely on electric power?
Yes, for short journeys of up to 30 miles, dependent on the model.
Pure Electric
What is a pure electric car?
Powered by a plug-in battery and propelled by electric motors only.
How are they charged?
By being plugged in, and through regenerative braking while on the move.
How long can I drive before I need to recharge the battery?
The pure electric XC40 Recharge has a range of around 274 miles (WLTP).
