Exeter Chiefs missed out on a play-off spot in the final round of Gallagher Premiership fixtures but the future looks bright for the Vertu Motors-backed aide after a solid season on the pitch.

Rob Baxter and his team went into the final round of games with a chance of making it into the top four, but needed to beat Leicester in order to make it into the play-off positions.

Exeter grabbed the lead in the early stages when Immanuel Feyi-Waboso finishing off a fine team move before Henry Slade added the extras from the kick.

However, Leicester responded and after Handre Pollard converted a penalty, Ollie Hassell-Collins charged down the wing to score the first of two quick tries – the second coming from Jack van Poortvliet four minutes later.

Pollard added both conversions as well as a penalty, with a penalty from Slade leaving the gap at 20-10.

When Tommy Reffell and Mike Brown both scored for Leicester after the break, Exeter’s hopes of an unexpected play-off finish were all but ended although Dan Frost reduced the gap when he crossed the line just before the hour mark.

Even though Jasper Wiese was sent off for a foul on Ross Vintcent, who then scored a fourth Exeter try, two penalties for Kieran Wilkinson saw Leicester take the win 40-22 to leave the youthful Chiefs side seventh in the table.
