New BYD Dolphin G Deals

Overview of the BYD Dolphin G

Plug-in hybrids almost always arrive as SUVs or saloons. In the supermini class the Dolphin G is a rare exception, pairing up to 65 miles of electric range with the reach of a full petrol tank.

Most rivals this size ask you to choose petrol or full electric. The Dolphin G gives you both, on one compact footprint built for everyday streets.

Its 18.3kWh Blade Battery covers up to 65 miles of pure-electric range. If your daily commute sits inside that figure, you could drive most of the week on electricity alone, saving the petrol engine for longer trips and weekends away.

That range comes from BYD Super Hybrid with DM technology. Dual Mode means the Dolphin G runs as an electric vehicle (EV) until the battery is low, then blends in the petrol engine for a combined range of up to 646 miles. So a low battery never leaves you hunting for a charger.

BYD is one of the world's largest makers of new-energy vehicles, and the Dolphin G is the first car it designed specifically for Europe. Vertu offers it in four trims: Active, Boost, Comfort and Sport.

Entry-level Active uses a smaller 7.4kWh battery for up to 24.9 miles of electric running, while Boost, Comfort and Sport share the larger 18.3kWh pack. If most of your week fits inside 65 miles, you can run on electricity and keep the petrol engine in reserve for the journeys that need it. For most drives it responds like an electric car: quiet, immediate and petrol-free.

New BYD Dolphin G Interior

Inside, the Dolphin G puts space and simplicity first, and its boot is where that shows most. Capacity runs to a 425-litre boot, more than many family hatchbacks from the class above.

Fold the 40:60 split-folding rear seats and that opens up to 1,225 litres. That is enough for a pushchair, a full weekly shop or a flat-pack run, in a car short enough for city parking.

That practicality comes from clever packaging. A column-mounted gear selector frees the space between the front seats for a two-level storage area, a cupholder and, on most versions, a wireless smartphone charger.

Ahead of you sits an 8.8-inch digital driver's display, paired with a floating touchscreen: 10.1 inches on Active and 12.8 inches from Boost upward. Comfort and Sport add built-in Google, bringing Google Maps and Google Assistant straight to the dashboard.

Comfort and above introduce a widescreen head-up display and a panoramic roof with an electric sunshade, features usually found a class or two higher. Upholstery climbs with the range too, from cloth on Active to vegan leather on Comfort and a two-tone vegan suede finish on Sport.

New BYD Dolphin G Exterior

The Dolphin G wears BYD's Ocean-inspired design language over a footprint built for real streets. At 4,160mm long and 1,825mm wide, it slots neatly into tight urban parking.

Yet its 2,610mm wheelbase, long for the class, is exactly what delivers the cabin and boot space inside. You park something supermini-sized, then step into room a size class up.

A single shoulder line runs from the front wing to the tail, and a floating roof effect gives the profile a sense of movement. Signature LED lighting front and rear, plus an integrated rear spoiler housing the third brake light, finish the look.

Wheels step up through the range. Active and Boost sit on 16-inch alloys, Comfort moves to 18-inch alloys, and Sport fits a darker 18-inch design with discreet badging for a sharper stance. Paint spans Skiing White, Time Grey, Obsidian Black and Ocean Blue, with an Orange Sunset pearlescent option; Sport is offered in Ocean Blue or Orange Sunset only.

BYD Dolphin G Trims and Specifications

Four trims make up the Dolphin G range, and choosing between them comes down to battery size and equipment. Active opens the range with the 7.4kWh battery, 16-inch alloys, LED lights, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

Boost is the sweet spot for most customers. It switches to the 18.3kWh battery for the full 65-mile electric range. On top of that come a 12.8-inch touchscreen, heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless charging and, usefully, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) for powering appliances from the car.

Comfort layers on the head-up display, panoramic roof, 360-degree view camera, an electric driver's seat with lumbar support, 18-inch alloys and built-in Google. Sport keeps that specification and adds its darker wheels and suede-trimmed cabin. The table below shows how features and equipment split across the four trims.

BYD Dolphin G Engines and Performance

Every Dolphin G shares one Super Hybrid powertrain, so performance stays consistent while battery size and charging change across the range. The system pairs a 163PS electric motor with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, and the motor drives the wheels most of the time for the quiet, immediate response of an EV.

That motor delivers 210Nm from a standstill, enough for 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. It makes the Dolphin G feel brisk in town and confident when you need to join a motorway at speed.

Boost, Comfort and Sport add 39kW DC rapid charging, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 26 minutes. A motorway coffee stop is roughly all it takes to restore the electric miles. Active charges at up to 3.3kW AC, while Boost and above step up to a 6.6kW on-board charger.

On battery power the Dolphin G drives with zero tailpipe emissions, and in EV mode it behaves like a full electric car until the charge runs low. BYD quotes combined CO₂ emissions as low as 9g/km on Boost, Comfort and Sport. The figures below compare battery, range, charging and performance across the range.

New BYD Dolphin G: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BYD Dolphin G Worth Buying?

The BYD Dolphin G is worth considering if you want one car that handles both electric commuting and longer petrol trips. As a rare plug-in hybrid in the supermini class, it offers up to 65 miles of electric range, a 425-litre boot and a combined range of up to 646 miles. Every version comes with Vertu's dealership backing, and our colleagues can help you match one of the four trims to your driving. The electric-led Boost suits most commutes, while Comfort and Sport add higher-end technology such as a head-up display and panoramic roof.

Which UK Dealerships Offer the Dolphin G Electric Vehicle for Test Drives?

You can see and test drive the BYD Dolphin G at Vertu's BYD dealerships across the UK. Book an appointment online or in person, and our colleagues will arrange a test drive and walk you through the Active, Boost, Comfort and Sport trims. A short drive is the best way to feel how the electric-led Super Hybrid system behaves in everyday traffic. Use our BYD dealership finder to choose the location nearest you and book a time that suits.

How Long Will the BYD Dolphin G Battery Last?

The Dolphin G uses BYD's Blade Battery, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) design chosen for its durability and stable long-term performance. BYD covers it under an 8-year or 125,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first, alongside the 6-year or 93,750-mile vehicle warranty. Warranty terms can vary by model, so your local Vertu dealership can confirm the exact cover for the Dolphin G. LFP chemistry is known for holding up well to regular top-ups, which suits a plug-in hybrid that many customers will charge overnight for the daily commute.

BYD Dolphin G vs Atto 2: What's the Difference?

The main difference is body style. The BYD Dolphin G is a compact plug-in hybrid hatchback, while the Atto 2 DM-i is a taller SUV that measures around 170mm longer than the Dolphin G. The Dolphin G suits customers who want a smaller, easy-to-park footprint with plug-in hybrid flexibility, whereas the Atto 2 offers a higher driving position and SUV proportions. Both use BYD's Blade Battery and Super Hybrid technology, so the choice comes down to size and body style rather than powertrain. Our colleagues can compare the two in person.

BYD Dolphin G vs Dolphin Surf: Which Should You Choose?

The choice comes down to how you want to be powered. The BYD Dolphin G is a plug-in hybrid hatchback that pairs up to 65 miles of electric range with a petrol engine, for a combined range of up to 646 miles. The Dolphin Surf, by contrast, is a smaller fully electric city car with no petrol engine at all. The Dolphin G suits customers who want electric daily driving without depending solely on charging, since the petrol engine covers longer journeys. Book an appointment at your nearest Vertu dealership to see the Dolphin G range and compare the two.
