Most rivals this size ask you to choose petrol or full electric. The Dolphin G gives you both, on one compact footprint built for everyday streets.

Its 18.3kWh Blade Battery covers up to 65 miles of pure-electric range. If your daily commute sits inside that figure, you could drive most of the week on electricity alone, saving the petrol engine for longer trips and weekends away.

That range comes from BYD Super Hybrid with DM technology. Dual Mode means the Dolphin G runs as an electric vehicle (EV) until the battery is low, then blends in the petrol engine for a combined range of up to 646 miles. So a low battery never leaves you hunting for a charger.

That practicality comes from clever packaging. A column-mounted gear selector frees the space between the front seats for a two-level storage area, a cupholder and, on most versions, a wireless smartphone charger.

Ahead of you sits an 8.8-inch digital driver's display, paired with a floating touchscreen: 10.1 inches on Active and 12.8 inches from Boost upward. Comfort and Sport add built-in Google, bringing Google Maps and Google Assistant straight to the dashboard.

Comfort and above introduce a widescreen head-up display and a panoramic roof with an electric sunshade, features usually found a class or two higher. Upholstery climbs with the range too, from cloth on Active to vegan leather on Comfort and a two-tone vegan suede finish on Sport.

The Dolphin G wears BYD's Ocean-inspired design language over a footprint built for real streets. At 4,160mm long and 1,825mm wide, it slots neatly into tight urban parking.

A single shoulder line runs from the front wing to the tail, and a floating roof effect gives the profile a sense of movement. Signature LED lighting front and rear, plus an integrated rear spoiler housing the third brake light, finish the look.

Wheels step up through the range. Active and Boost sit on 16-inch alloys, Comfort moves to 18-inch alloys, and Sport fits a darker 18-inch design with discreet badging for a sharper stance. Paint spans Skiing White, Time Grey, Obsidian Black and Ocean Blue, with an Orange Sunset pearlescent option; Sport is offered in Ocean Blue or Orange Sunset only.

Four trims make up the Dolphin G range, and choosing between them comes down to battery size and equipment. Active opens the range with the 7.4kWh battery, 16-inch alloys, LED lights, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

Boost is the sweet spot for most customers. It switches to the 18.3kWh battery for the full 65-mile electric range. On top of that come a 12.8-inch touchscreen, heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless charging and, usefully, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) for powering appliances from the car.

Comfort layers on the head-up display, panoramic roof, 360-degree view camera, an electric driver's seat with lumbar support, 18-inch alloys and built-in Google. BYD Dolphin G Engines and Performance

Every Dolphin G shares one Super Hybrid powertrain, so performance stays consistent while battery size and charging change across the range. The system pairs a 163PS electric motor with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, and the motor drives the wheels most of the time for the quiet, immediate response of an EV.

That motor delivers 210Nm from a standstill, enough for 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. It makes the Dolphin G feel brisk in town and confident when you need to join a motorway at speed.

Boost, Comfort and Sport add 39kW DC rapid charging, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 26 minutes. A motorway coffee stop is roughly all it takes to restore the electric miles. Active charges at up to 3.3kW AC, while Boost and above step up to a 6.6kW on-board charger.

On battery power the Dolphin G drives with zero tailpipe emissions, and in EV mode it behaves like a full electric car until the charge runs low.
