Choosing a new Volkswagen Golf starts with the powertrain, not the trim. Twelve trims span four powertrain families: 1.5 TSI petrol, 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid, 1.5 TSI eHybrid plug-in hybrid, and the 2.0 TSI performance range. Outputs run from a 115 PS commuter up to a 333 PS R Black Edition on 4MOTION all-wheel drive, with up to 88 miles of electric range available on the plug-in hybrid cars in between. Few mainstream hatches offer that spread on a single bodyshell.
The hatch is the only body style in the current UK range, and that single focus means a wider menu of drivetrains than you'll find on most mainstream hatchbacks. You can order the new Volkswagen Golf as a 1.5 TSI manual, a 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid with 48V assistance and a seven-speed DSG, or a 204 PS or 272 PS plug-in eHybrid. Keen drivers can choose from the 2.0 TSI performance Golf in GTI, Clubsport, Edition 50, R, or R Black Edition form.
Vertu is a Volkswagen retailer, and our colleagues can walk you through the full new VW Golf hatchback lineup at dealerships across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. From an everyday commuter petrol to a plug-in that starts most mornings on a full charge, or a 50 Years of GTI performance Golf, we can match the right car to how you drive.
Not sure which powertrain suits you? Our Volkswagen Golf review sits above, walking through the cabin, the technology and how each engine behaves on the road.
The eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf arrived in 2020 and had its biggest update in July 2024. That revision brought new MIB4 infotainment, revised front styling with an illuminated VW logo, IQ.Light Matrix LED headlights and an IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT integration. More than 37 million Golfs have been built since 1974, almost 2.3 million of them bought in the UK. The formula is well-settled: a five-door hatch, a composed cabin, and a drive that still sets a benchmark in the small family car class.
That formula now carries a wider powertrain menu than any previous Golf. The 1.5 TSI petrol engine delivers 115 PS or 150 PS, both with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Choose the 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid at 150 PS and you get Active Cylinder Technology, a 44V assistance system and a 7-speed DSG automatic. Above that sits the 1.5 TSI eHybrid plug-in hybrid at 204 PS in Style eHybrid trim, or 272 PS in the GTE. Keen drivers can choose from the 265 PS GTI, 300 PS GTI Clubsport, 325 PS GTI Edition 50, and the 333 PS Golf R and R Black Edition with 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
That gives you room to match the Golf to how you actually drive, rather than letting the trim dictate the engine. A long-motorway commuter is well served by the 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid. A household with a driveway charger could run the Style eHybrid on electric power for most of the working week. A weekend driver who wants genuine performance gets a choice between the front-driven GTI variants or the all-wheel-drive R. On most lineups, those are three different models; on the Golf, they're three options under the same badge.
The headline change inside the new VW Golf is the MIB4 infotainment system, a 12.9-inch standalone touchscreen with a redesigned menu structure and illuminated touch sliders at its base for temperature and volume. Those sliders have been a point of criticism on earlier Golf cars; the illuminated, more ergonomic replacement is a genuine improvement, especially at night. The Digital Cockpit Pro instrument display, a 10.2-inch high-resolution unit with Classic or Progressive layouts, is standard across the range.
Behind that cockpit you'll find an IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT built in, so you can ask natural questions about navigation, media and climate without reaching for the screen. Wireless App-Connect brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without a cable, and wireless phone charging is standard. A head-up display and a Harman Kardon sound system are offered as options for anyone who wants their cabin tuned a step further.
Seat choice climbs with trim. Life and Match get Comfort seats, Style adds sports comfort seats in ArtVelours microfleece, and R-Line, Black Edition and the performance Golfs get Premium sports seats with firmer bolstering. The upgraded sports seats hold you more securely on a twisty B-road without losing long-journey comfort. Interior ambient lighting runs ten colours on Life and Match and thirty on Style upwards, with illuminated decorative inserts, illuminated door handles and a selectable-colour footwell unit on higher trims. Air Care Climatronic in three-zone form, with a rear control panel, comes standard on Style, GTE and R variants, which is worth having on a family car where rear passengers rarely agree with the front.
Volkswagen refreshed the Golf's front end in 2024 with new LED headlights that narrow towards the centre. A horizontal LED strip crosses the radiator grille, and an illuminated VW logo features on cars fitted with LED Plus or IQ.Light Matrix headlights. The IQ.Light Matrix unit, standard on Black Edition and GTE and optional elsewhere, uses a high-performance LED main beam that reaches up to 500 metres, which is noticeably further than a conventional main beam.
At the rear, the new Golf gets 3D LED tail clusters with dynamic turn signals and a choice of three welcome and goodbye animations configured from the infotainment settings. Four new paint colours join the palette: Crystal Ice Blue metallic, Anemone Blue metallic, Oyster Silver metallic and Grenadilla Black metallic. R-Line and GTE trims can be specified with a black-painted roof, worth considering if you're leaning into the Golf's sportier side.
Wheel sizes climb with trim too. Life rolls on 16-inch Norfolk alloys, Match and Style on 17-inch Nottingham, R-Line on 17-inch Coventry black diamond-turned, and Black Edition on 18-inch Leeds. The performance Golfs sit on 18 or 19-inch Richmond, Jerez, Estoril Black and Queenstown designs. The GTI Edition 50's 19-inch Queenstown wheels with a red glaze finish are the clearest visual signal of the 50 Years of GTI anniversary spec.
The current new VW Golf hatchback range runs twelve trims. The mainstream ladder climbs from Life through Match, Style, R-Line and Black Edition, with the plug-in Style eHybrid and GTE above. The 2.0 TSI performance range covers the Golf GTI, Clubsport, Edition 50, R and R Black Edition. The table below sets out the equipment that separates the five core trims most new buyers shop.

Match earns its place in the lineup by adding the rear-view camera, Keyless Access with SAFELOCK and High Beam Assist for a modest step up from Life. Style is the clearest value turn in the range, bringing LED Plus headlights with the illuminated VW logo, three-zone Climatronic, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist and the thirty-colour ambient lighting. R-Line adds sports suspension and the Coventry alloys for a sharper look. Black Edition takes the R-Line template and darkens it with IQ.Light Matrix headlights, black mirror housings and the illuminated VW logo, delivering the Golf at its most assertive on the kerb.
Four powertrain families cover the new Volkswagen Golf hatchback: 1.5 TSI petrol, 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid, 1.5 TSI eHybrid plug-in hybrid, and the 2.0 TSI performance range topped by the all-wheel-drive Golf R. The table below sets out power, performance and WLTP figures for each.

WLTP figures are for comparison purposes and may not reflect real-world driving. Economy and CO2 vary with trim, wheel size and specification; the ranges shown span the trims each engine is offered in.
For a long-motorway commuter the 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid at 150 PS is arguably the sweet spot: 54.2mpg combined and a seven-speed DSG that holds a relaxed gear at cruising speed. That combination keeps both the fuel bill and the cabin noise down on long motorway runs. A driver whose daily journeys sit comfortably under 88 miles could run the Style eHybrid plug-in on battery power alone for most of the week, charging overnight at home with zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving. The GTE goes further by combining 272 PS with up to 82 miles of electric range, so the hot-hatch pace and the running-cost case stay on the same car.
