A Guide to the Latest Motability Insurance Updates

  • Direct Line Motability (DLM) is now the insurance provider for the Motability Scheme.
  • There have been several other insurance changes, all designed to improve your customer experience.
  • Our guide outlines everything you need to know about these changes.

We're committed to keeping you informed about all things related to the Motability Scheme.

Starting on 1st September 2023, Direct Line Motability (DLM) became the new insurance provider for the Motability Scheme. Additionally, there have been several other insurance updates you'll want to be aware of.

Keep reading for a full round-up.

Simplified renewal insurance check process

The insurance check at the point of application was removed on 1st August 2023. This change is designed to make the renewal application process more efficient.

Now, Direct Line Motability will conduct the insurance check five months before the end of your contract. This means that when you view your application you will only see information regarding the ‘Award Check’ and ‘Driver Check’.

Waiver for new open insurance policy

The Motability Scheme provides an open insurance policy to:

  • Customers who require full-time care.
  • Customers who have a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) with multiple carers who drive the vehicle.

As of 1st September 2023, you will no longer need to provide a letter from your care provider to confirm your eligibility. Instead, you can confirm your eligibility for open insurance via an open policy waiver in your online account.

Three drivers included in the application

You can now add three named drivers to your application. This can be implemented through your online account or at your local dealership using Online Applications (OLA). You can also change drivers at a later date using your online account.

Previously, you were limited to adding two drivers at the point of application.

Options for foreign licence in OLA

Previously, if you wanted to add a driver with a foreign licence to your vehicle, the application had to be referred, which often caused delays.

Starting from 1st September 2023, a dropdown option has been added in OLA. This allows you to choose the EU/EEA country of licence. Eligibility will be confirmed online without the need for a referral.

New insurance portal in the customer online account

From 1st September, you can access the DLM insurance portal from your online account.

Key features include:

  • Policy summary section: Provides documents and the option to request a claims history letter.
  • Policy details section: Includes dynamic excesses.
  • Manage drivers section: Allows you to add or remove drivers and reactivate inactive drivers.

It is hoped that these insurance updates will enhance your Motability experience. Stay up to date with our Newsroom for more Scheme news.
