The BYD Dolphin G DM-I as received its premiere as the first car to offer plug-in hybrid technology in the supermini class.

Set to rival the likes of the Vauxhall Corsa and Renault Clio, the Dolphin G will be able to run on electric power and conventional fuel for a total range of 621-miles.

Significantly, this is BYD’s first car to be launched primarily with European audiences in mind and – unlike other arrivals from the Chinese manufacturer – is an all-new model that will hit the UK and the continent first.

Though finer details – such performance and electric-only range – are being kept under wraps for now, BYD has revealed what the Dolphin G will look like.

Blending elements of other models in its line-up – namely the Dolphin Surf and Sealion 5 – the Dolphin G gets a sharp interpretation of BYD’s familiar front-end, while the inclusion of a floating roof and window at the rear quarter should ensure plenty of cabin light.

While most superminis now come with a form of full-hybrid or full-electric options, this is the first B-segment model to get a plug-in option.

Named ‘Super Hybrid and DM technology’ by BYD, the set-up has already proven popular in the firm’s other cars, not least the BYD Seal U DM-i.

BYD is also promising class-leading practicality, while revealing it is 4.16m long – which is marginally longer than a Vauxhall Corsa.

The new BYD Dolphin G will go on sale at Vertu BYD dealerships in the coming week
