The Vauxhall Corsa GSE has received its world premiere as the British brand heralds its return to the hot hatch sector with a high-performance, all-electric offering boasting a sparky 276bhp.

While it has been a while since the marque gave its long-running supermini a fiery overhaul, the GSE represents the latest in a long line of small sporty Vauxhalls that have emerged over the decades.

These include the Nova GTE, the Corsa GSi and the Corsa VXR, but while they were all hot hatches in the conventional sense with their turbocharged petrol-fuelled engines, the new Corsa GSE takes the formula in a whole new direction.

At its heart is a 54kWh battery that has been tuned to deliver a whopping 276bhp, which combined with a feathery 1554kg (for an electric model) helps the Corsa GSE sprint to 0-62mph in just 5.5secs.

The sporty credentials aren’t just reserved for the powerful battery, however with Vauxhall getting a Torsen multi-plate limited slip differential and a lowered sports chassis with specifically designed axles, stabilisers and hydraulic shock absorbers.

The rorty underpinnings are framed by the Corsa GSE’s racy makeover, which is distinguished by re-designed front and rear bumpers, GSE branding and a glimpse at yellow-plated Alcon high-performance braking system.

The Corsa GSE also gets a wider track, which is accentuated by black wheelarch housings and 18-inch alloy wheels designed to be reminiscent of the original Nova GTE (called Corsa GTE in Europe).

Inside, the Corsa GSE features figure-hugging bucket seats complete with yellow and black tartan trim, plus Alcantara inserts on the steering wheel and the doors.

The arrival of the Corsa GSE comes just as a new era of electric-powered hot hatches comes into focus.

Indeed, the Corsa GSE isn’t the only new small yet sprightly EV due in 2026 with the Peugeot E-208 GTI also on the way. The model, which shares the same running gear as the Corsa GSE, harks back to the original 205 GTI with its pepperpot alloy wheels and two-tone red and black exterior trim.

Also in the pipeline is a GTI version of the new Volkswagen ID. Polo, the standard version of which was only revealed last week.
