Volkswagen has pulled the wraps off the first electric car that will wear its hallowed GTI badge, the high-performance Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI hot hatch EV.

The unveiling of the GTI flagship comes a few weeks after the standard Volkswagen ID. Polo was revealed, a small electric hatchback promising new standards for EV efficiency and practicality in the burgeoning sector.

The ID. Polo GTI, which will sit atop the range when it goes on sale in 2027, is a defining moment for the German marque as it looks to synchronise its best-known nameplates with its electric ambitions.

The Volkswagen ID. Polo itself – which is similar in size to the conventionally fuelled Polo but gets its own style references - is the first step in this strategy, but applying the GTI badge to an electric model represents another bold step.

The specifications make for compelling reading: A 52kWh battery producing 223bhp and 290Nm of torque, which enables a 0-62mph sprint of 6.8-seconds.

Moreover, Volkswagen is promising the ID. Polo GTI will live up to iconic ancestors – namely the original Golf GTI – from behind the wheel thanks to a major overhaul of the chassis compared with the standard ID. Polo.

Firstly, the ID. Polo GTI gets adaptive sports suspension known as Dynamic Chassis Control and progressive steering tuned specifically for this model. There is also a front differential lock to help distribute the power evenly and promote an engaging driving feel that is less about outright grunt and more about nimble cornering.

There is also a new GTI driving profile, which is activated by a button on the steering wheel. This shifts the drive and chassis systems – including the electric motor – into maximum sportiness with a simple click, while the cockpit changes to a specific colour and graphics scheme.

The latter feature further accentuates an interior that marries sporty features with premium quality, as demonstrated by the throwback tartan design of the figure-hugging seats and the red stitching on the upholstered door inserts and dashboard.

Those who appreciate nostalgia will enjoy the chance to select the retro display option for the Digital Cockpit that has been inspired by the first-generation Golf GTI of the 1970’s.

From the outside, the ID. Polo GTI adopts a sporty upgrade over the already handsome base model.

Highlights include potted 19-inch alloy wheels and a red stripe at the front that has been the hallmark of VW GTI models for decades, while the familiar honeycomb grille has been reappropriated for use on the lower intake.

While the uptick in performance means battery range is reduced to 259-miles (compared to the 283-miles of the standard 52kWh ID. Polo) it does get the same superbly packaged interior, most notably a huge 441-litre boot.

Volkswagen isn’t the only manufacturer dabbling in a new era of electric hot hatches either.

The new ID. Polo GTI will go up against the new Peugeot E-208 GTI and Vauxhall Corsa GSE, two more models that are drawing on the inspiration of hot hatches from their back catalogue by rebooting them with an electric heart.

All three models are due to go on sale in early-2027, setting us up for an enthralling hot hatch throwdown…
