CUPRA Born Review: The Vertu VERDICT

“The CUPRA Born has two very appealing sides to it. It is the grown-up, practical and easy-to-live-with electric car you need day-to-day, but - unlike other family EVs - it can also be a riot of fun when you want to push on. With poised ride and handling, plus that sprinkling of CUPRA finesse both inside and outside, the Born is one of the few electric cars out there that can be all things to all people. Oh, and if you invest in the flagship VZ, prepare for some scorching performance that'll shame most sports cars."

CUPRA Born: The Key Features

  • CUPRA - a portmanteau of 'Cup' and 'Racing' - was launched as its own outright brand in 2018 by SEAT having originally debuted as a trim level designated to the Spanish marque's performance models
  • The recently updated CUPRA Born shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo but has been styled and tuned to offer a sportier personality
  • Keeping up with SEAT and CUPRA's trend of naming cars after Spanish locations, 'Born' is a particularly fashionable neighbourhood in Barcelona.
  • Looks are distinguished by new triangular-shaped lighting signature, on brand copper accents and fresh 'shark nose' design
  • Even the base 59kWh models offer an impressive 300-miles of range, but invest more and range increases to a class-leading 389-miles (WLTP)
  • Spicy Born VZ features dual-motors, a scintillating 322bhp on tap and can sprint to 0-62mph in just 5.6-secs
  • Born has been awarded the maximum five-stars by EuroNCAP crash test assessment
  • CUPRA Born comes with a standard 5-year/90,000-mile manufacturer warranty
  • Winner of 2025 What Car? Best Electric Family Car (New and Used) and 2024 Autocar Best Electric Car Awards

Who is the CUPRA Born Best Suited To?

  • Small families who will appreciate class-leading performance and range in a practical hatchback body style
  • Enthusiastic drivers who need the practicality and low running costs of an electric family car but still want slick performance and head-turning style
  • Hot hatch fans enticed by the Born VZ's rapid power and acceleration
  • Professionals wanting a daily commuter that is cheap to run day-to-day but won't be hampered on longer journeys

Electric Hatchbacks To Also Consider...

Original-23874-new-renault-megane-e-tech-electric-3 (1).jpg

Renault Megane E-Tech

The 5, 4, Twingo and Scenic might have been stealing all the attention recently but the facelifted Renault Megane E-Tech proves the French manufacturer's long-serving family hatchback remains an excellent proposition. New battery architecture has pushed range up to 320-miles, improved recharging to just 24-mins and - even better - means the Megane E-Tech is now eligible for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant

Volvo EX30 statics 110.jpg

Volvo EX30

Blending hatchback sensibility with a trendy SUV look, the Volvo EX30 has the epitome of Volvo's 'Scandi-cool' design signatures both inside and out. Choose between batteries that produce 253bhp or a whopping 422bhp, while still delivering between 209 and 300-miles of range.

MG4

It was a brave moment for MG to deviate from its (successful) SUV theme to develop an all-electric hatchback, but the MG4 shows it was worth going off-piste. The MG4 looks sharp (even sharper after a recent facelift) offers an engaging drive with its rear-wheel drive set-up and is great value considering the range and practicality. Plus, the MG4 XPower is - like the CUPRA Born VZ - a sporty wolf in sheep's clothing.
