Every new BMW car at Vertu comes with a real choice of engine, from the compact 1 Series hatch through to the seven-seat X7 and 7 Series flagships. Petrol and diesel power most of the four-cylinder and six-cylinder ranges, and 48V mild hybrid technology works quietly in the background of models like the M340i and X3. Plug-in hybrid versions such as the 330e, 530e and X5 xDrive50e sit alongside fully electric i-badged siblings. The M Performance range tops every family with its own six-cylinder or V8 M engines, so whichever nameplate you're drawn to, there's usually more than one way into it.

BMW's story starts with two men and two companies. Karl Rapp's engine works and Gustav Otto's aircraft manufacturing business combined to form Bayerische Motoren Werke. The roundel that resulted has appeared on every BMW product since 1917, progressing from aircraft engines to motorcycles and then cars over more than a century of production. BMW Classic now looks after that history through its own archive, vehicle collection and museum. BMW Group's UK footprint backs it with real investment too: nearly £2 billion put into UK operations since 2000, making Britain the group's fourth-largest sales market worldwide. That footprint includes Plant Hams Hall, where BMW has built four-cylinder petrol engines since 2001.

Where BMW pulls away from some premium rivals is in how it treats all-wheel drive. xDrive isn't fitted across the board: the 320i, 420i and standard M2 send power through the rear wheels alone, so buyers who want that traditional rear-drive feel can still have it. xDrive steps in instead as the option on faster or more weather-dependent variants, and as standard on the M Performance and larger SUV ranges. The bigger shift right now is happening in the cabin. Alongside the familiar BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 9 running most of the range, a new generation has arrived: BMW Panoramic iDrive and BMW Heart of Joy. It first appeared on the Neue Klasse i3 saloon and iX3, and now carries into the new 7 Series. Two distinct technology generations are sitting side by side in the same showroom.

That range breaks down into five groups: hatches, saloons and Tourings, SUVs, coupes and convertibles, and the M Performance line. Each is covered below, together with the technology that runs across all of them and every current model available to order through Vertu.

What Are BMW Cars Like to Drive?

How a BMW drives depends less on which body style you pick than on which powertrain sits underneath it, since almost every current range now spans several. Here's what each group offers.

Hatch

The 1 Series opens the range with the 120's 170hp 48V mild hybrid petrol engine, a 7.8-second 0-62mph and front-wheel drive as standard, with Sport, M Sport and M Sport Pro trims to choose between. Step up to the 123 xDrive and the badge itself tells you what's changed: 218hp and all-wheel-drive traction cut that time to 6.3 seconds. The range-topping M Sport M135 xDrive goes further still, with 300hp, 400Nm and a 4.9-second sprint, backed by an Adaptive M Chassis and the largest boot in the 1 Series range at 380-1,200 litres. The 2 Series widens the same idea across three different bodies: Active Tourer, Coupe and Gran Coupe. The 225e xDrive Active Tourer plugs in for 50.3-53.4 miles of electric-only range with 245hp combined, and the M235 xDrive Gran Coupe matches the 1 Series flagship almost exactly, at 300hp and a 4.9-second 0-62mph. Either way, you get M Performance pace without needing a bigger body to carry it.

Saloon & Touring

The 3 Series carries three distinct engine families into the same Saloon and Touring bodies: the 184hp 320i, the 392hp six-cylinder M340i xDrive, and the 330e plug-in hybrid. The 330e alone is good for 58-62 miles of electric range. Sitting alongside it from later this year is the i3, BMW's new Neue Klasse electric saloon. It's badged 50 xDrive with 469hp, a 4.7-second 0-62mph and a WLTP range BMW quotes at up to 563 miles on its First Edition launch specification. Move up to the 5 Series and the plug-in options get serious: the 550e's 489hp is enough for a 4.3-second 0-62mph. The fully electric i5 M60 xDrive goes further again, at 601hp and 3.8 seconds. At the top of the range, the 7 Series is now plug-in-hybrid-only in the UK, led by the 571hp M760e xDrive. The electric i7 runs alongside it through three power tiers, up to the 680hp, 3.8-second M70 xDrive.

SUV

This is the widest group in the range, and it's where most buyers considering a BMW electric SUV will end up looking. The X1 and X2 share the same engine spread, from the 150hp diesel sDrive18d up to the 300hp M35i xDrive. Their electric iX1 and iX2 siblings offer up to roughly 319 and 321 miles of WLTP range respectively. The X3 pairs 197-398hp engine choices with a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Its electric iX3 sibling splits into a 320hp rear-wheel-drive 40 and a 469hp all-wheel-drive 50 xDrive, the latter quoted at up to 500.8 miles WLTP. Further up, the X5, X6 and X7 all offer diesel, V8 petrol and, on the X5, plug-in hybrid power. The X7 is the only model in the range built as a genuine seven-seater as standard, carrying up to 2,120 litres with the rear rows folded. A fully electric X4 successor, the iX4, is confirmed as coming, replacing the discontinued combustion X4.

Coupe, Convertible & Gran Coupe

Two-door BMW buyers get the same engine choice as the saloon range, just wrapped in a sportier body. The 4 Series covers Coupe and Convertible bodies with the same 184hp 420i and 392hp M440i xDrive engines as the 3 Series. The i4 electric vehicle BMW model brings a four-door Gran Coupe shape to the same idea: the eDrive40 reaches up to 371 miles of WLTP range on 340hp, and the M60 flagship pairs 601hp with a 3.7-second 0-62mph.

M Performance

BMW's M range spans everything from a 480hp compact coupe to a 748hp plug-in hybrid flagship. The M2 starts things off with 480hp and a choice of manual or automatic gearbox, rising to the track-focused M2 CS at 530hp. The M3 and M4 are now M xDrive-only, both delivering 530hp with 0-62mph in as little as 3.5 seconds, while the M4 CS pushes to 550hp and a 3.4-second sprint. The M5 brings BMW's first electrified M engine to its Saloon and Touring bodies, combining a V8 and an electric motor for a 727hp system total and 3.5-3.6 seconds to 62mph. It adds 37-42 miles of usable electric range alongside that pace. The X5 M and X6 M share a 625hp V8, and the XM tops the whole range as a BMW plug-in hybrid, from 476hp in the XM 50e to 748hp in the XM Label. It's the clearest reminder in the whole range that BMW still builds cars for the driver first.

BMW Interior and Technology

Two infotainment generations currently run through the BMW range. Most models, from the 1 Series to the X7, use BMW Curved Display, running through several generations of BMW Operating System from 8 to 9 depending on the model. It pairs with iDrive and, on the newest cars, QuickSelect. Standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as part of that package. The Neue Klasse cars run something newer: BMW Panoramic iDrive on BMW Panoramic Vision, governed by the BMW Heart of Joy central computer, which BMW describes as one of the car's core "superbrains." Ambient lighting, panoramic glass roofs and Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins sound upgrades run across most of the range as options. Merino leather and Veganza leather-free trim cover most of the material choices between them.
