Toyota's story starts with looms, not cars. Sakichi Toyoda's automatic weaving machines funded the business that his son, Kiichiro Toyoda, turned toward vehicle manufacturing during the 1930s. In 1997, that same engineering instinct produced the original Prius. Toyota did something no other manufacturer had managed: it put a self-charging hybrid into mass production, at a time when most of the industry still treated electrification as a novelty.
Almost thirty years on, that hybrid technology runs through nearly every model in Toyota's UK range, from the compact Aygo X to the family-sized RAV4. Self-charging hybrid remains the default across most of the line-up. Plug-in hybrid extends your electric-only range on models such as RAV4 and Prius, and a growing electric range headed by bZ4X sits alongside them, delivering zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving. At the edges of the range, the body-on-frame Land Cruiser and the rally-bred GR Yaris show a manufacturer still building cars purely because it can.

Toyota's UK range splits naturally into eight groups, from compact city cars to a proper off-roader, each shaped by the powertrain choice that suits it best.
Aygo X brings SUV-styled proportions to a genuinely compact footprint, its 1.5-litre self-charging hybrid returning up to 76.3mpg WLTP combined with CO2 from 87g/km, so short trips and tight parking spaces cost you very little. 50:50 split-folding rear seats and 231 litres of boot space keep it practical for a small car. Yaris keeps that same hybrid simplicity but stops pretending to be a city car, offered with 116hp or a brisker 130hp engine. Its boot grows from 347 litres to 947 litres once the rear seats are folded flat, enough for a supermarket shop, a set of golf clubs, and whatever else the weekend throws at you.
Yaris Cross carries that same hybrid formula into a compact SUV body, with 116hp or 130hp self-charging options. On Excel, it's the only all-wheel-drive Yaris Cross in the range, for drivers wanting extra traction without stepping up a class. Boot space grows to 460 litres with the rear seats up, or 1,097 litres folded flat.
Urbancruiser takes the crossover shape fully electric, with a 49kWh battery on Icon returning up to 213.75 miles WLTP, or a 61kWh battery from Design upward stretching that to 264.7 miles. Its 40:20:40 split-folding and sliding second row is a genuinely flexible layout for a car this size.
C-HR pairs bold coupe-crossover styling with a choice of two self-charging hybrid outputs or a plug-in hybrid delivering CO2 from 19g/km. From Design trim upward, twin digital displays give the cabin a fully digital cockpit feel. Its fully electric relation, C-HR+, carries the same design further with up to 377 miles of WLTP range on its larger battery, and heated front seats plus dual-zone climate fitted as standard across every trim.
Corolla Hatchback and Corolla Touring Sports share the same 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre self-charging hybrid engines, the quicker 2.0-litre reaching 62mph in 7.4 seconds in the hatchback while still returning up to 62.7mpg WLTP combined. Touring Sports trades a little outright pace for space, with a boot growing to up to 596 litres with the rear seats up and 1,606 litres folded. That's useful if your Corolla needs to double as load carrier as often as family car.
bZ4X is Toyota's dedicated electric SUV, offered with two battery sizes and, on the range-topping dual-motor version, 343hp and a 5.1-second 0–62mph time. Its estate-bodied sibling, bZ4X Touring, trades some of that outright pace for a larger 669-litre boot and, on the Design grade, a WLTP range of up to 367 miles. Both produce zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving, with DC rapid charging from 10 to 80% taking around 30 minutes on bZ4X and around 28 minutes on bZ4X Touring.
RAV4 switches entirely to plug-in hybrid power for its current generation, giving you up to 85 miles of WLTP electric-only range on the front-wheel-drive version. Choose the all-wheel-drive AWD-i and you get a quicker 5.8-second 0–62mph time, with both backed by Toyota's 15-year Hybrid Battery Cover. Land Cruiser takes a different route entirely, and doesn't pretend to be a soft-roader in a costume. Its 2.8-litre diesel pairs 48V mild-hybrid assist with permanent four-wheel drive, a locking rear differential, and low-range gearing, built to leave the tarmac behind entirely, not just look like it could.
GR Yaris exists because Toyota wanted to go rallying, then decided the road car should be just as serious as the car built to win stages. Its turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine sends 280PS through permanent four-wheel drive, with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 0–62mph time of 5.2 seconds beats plenty of hot hatches twice its size.
Prius remains the model that started Toyota's hybrid story, though today's UK car is plug-in hybrid only. It combines 223hp with CO2 emissions from 36g/km and a 6.8-second 0–62mph time, proof that Toyota's most efficient model no longer has to be its slowest.
Proace City Verso and Proace Verso complete the range as fully electric people carriers, with twin sliding doors on both. Seating runs to up to seven in Proace City Verso, or up to nine in the larger Proace Verso. Both deliver zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving, with WLTP ranges up to 213 miles and 133 miles respectively across their battery options.
Every current Toyota gives you a consistent approach to safety and technology, whichever size or powertrain you choose. On C-HR, Corolla, bZ4X, RAV4 and most other models, you get Toyota Safety Sense as standard fitment rather than an optional extra, bundling a Pre-Collision System, Lane Trace Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Aygo X, Yaris, Yaris Cross and Urbancruiser give you the same core protection unbranded, so you're not paying more for that reassurance in a smaller car. Newer models such as bZ4X Touring add Blind Spot Monitor and Safe Exit Assist too, and the system receives over-the-air updates, so your car's software can improve after you've driven it home.
You get Toyota's Smart Connect or Smart Connect+ infotainment across the range, both with wireless Apple CarPlay. On electric models such as bZ4X Touring, the MyToyota app adds remote charge monitoring and cabin preconditioning. What varies by trim is comfort rather than safety. JBL premium audio, ambient lighting, and heated or ventilated seats are reserved for higher grades across most model lines. A Nanoe X air purifier and Toyota's Skyview panoramic roof feature on selected models as you move up the range, though not every model offers them.
