What Are Volvo Cars Like to Drive?

The way a Volvo drives depends almost entirely on which of its three electrified powertrain families you choose. The current range splits into five groups by body style and power: compact and mid-size electric SUVs, the flagship electric SUV and saloon, an electric crossover, three hybrid SUVs, and two estates.

Compact & Mid-size Electric SUVs

The EX30 gets you into electric Volvo ownership at its most compact, with the entry Core returning up to 209.4 miles WLTP combined from a 51 kWh battery and a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. Stepping up to the Long Range Plus extends that to up to 295.2 miles WLTP, while the twin-motor Ultra P8 AWD adds real pace, reaching 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds. A rugged Cross Country variant, with raised ride height, is also available across the range. The EX30 produces zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving, like every fully electric Volvo.

The EX40 gives you a similarly compact footprint with more everyday range, its Core Single Motor Extended Range offering up to 356 miles WLTP from a single motor developing 252hp. The newest of the three, the EX60, goes further still. Built on Volvo's native 800V electrical architecture, the entry Plus P6 (RWD) returns up to 379.7 miles WLTP with a 16-minute 10-80% DC rapid charge. The range-topping Ultra P12 AWD extends that to up to 503.3 miles WLTP, the longest range anywhere in the current Volvo line-up, with 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds.

Flagship Electric SUV & Saloon

Space and range both step up considerably in the EX90 and ES90. The EX90 Core seats seven across three rows and returns up to 350.5 miles WLTP from its 92 kWh battery. A Twin Motor AWD option is also available, cutting 0-62mph to 5.5 seconds and extending range to up to 383.4 miles WLTP.

The ES90, Volvo's new electric saloon, shares that same 800V architecture as the EX60. The Plus returns up to 412.6 miles WLTP with a 22-minute 10-80% DC rapid charge, while the range-topping Ultra Twin Motor Performance reaches 0-62mph in just 4.0 seconds.

Electric Crossover

The EC40 takes the same electric underpinnings as the EX40 and wraps them in a coupe-styled body, for buyers who want a sportier roofline without losing practicality. Both powertrains include a 31-litre front load compartment for extra everyday storage. The Single Motor Extended Range returns up to 358.5 miles WLTP, while the Twin Motor AWD option cuts 0-62mph to 4.7 seconds and returns up to 339.3 miles WLTP.

Hybrid SUVs

The XC40, XC60, and XC90 cover buyers who want hybrid efficiency without switching to a fully electric car. The XC40 offers B3 or B4 mild hybrid petrol power, returning up to 42.8mpg combined without ever needing to be plugged in. The XC60 adds more choice again, available as a B5 AWD mild hybrid or as a T6 or T8 AWD Recharge plug-in hybrid. The T6 delivers up to 49.1 miles of WLTP electric-only range and 313.9mpg combined. The XC90 mirrors that choice in a larger, seven-seat body, with the T8 AWD Recharge plug-in hybrid returning up to 42.9 miles of WLTP electric range alongside CO2 emissions as low as 27g/km.

Estates

The V60 brings the same choice of power as the XC60 into a traditional estate body. The B4 mild hybrid returns 44.8mpg combined, while the T6 AWD Recharge plug-in hybrid delivers up to 60.9 miles of WLTP electric range and CO2 emissions of just 14g/km. The V90 extends that load-hauling tradition into a larger body, offering the estate practicality buyers expect alongside Volvo's usual choice of efficient powertrains.

Volvo Interior and Technology

Volvo's cabins share a common technology backbone across the entire range, whichever model or powertrain you choose.

You get Google built-in throughout, with Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store ready in the car from day one. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard, alongside over-the-air software updates that keep the system current without a dealership visit.

The Pilot Assist driver-assistance suite is available across the range from entry trims upward, working alongside BLIS and Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Keeping Aid to support you on longer journeys.

Audio is one of the clearest ways Volvo tiers its trims. Standard systems give way to Harman Kardon Premium Sound on mid-range Plus Pro and Ultra trims, before flagship models add a head-up display and step up again to Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio.

Heated front seats and Nordico upholstery, a durable and animal-free material, feature on entry electric trims, with Nappa leather, ventilated seats, and front seat massage reserved for higher grades. Several models also carry a crystal gear shift by Orrefors�, a small but recognisably Volvo detail.

Every electric and plug-in hybrid Volvo also comes with an extended battery warranty of eight years or 100,000 miles, on top of the standard three-year, 60,000-mile vehicle warranty. On the EX60 specifically, that battery cover can be extended further, to ten years or 150,000 miles, with a biennial battery health check.
