Overview of the New MG HS

The current MG HS is the second-generation car, redesigned in 2024. Three powertrains are built around the same 1.5T turbocharged petrol engine: a pure petrol, a self-charging MG HS Hybrid+, or an MG HS plug-in hybrid offering up to 75 miles of electric range (WLTP combined). That plug-in figure sits toward the top of the mainstream MG HS SUV class, where many rivals cap out at 30 to 50 miles.

Every powertrain is offered in two trims, SE and Trophy. Even the entry SE brings 19-inch 'Blade' alloy wheels, dual 12.3-inch screens, LED headlights, sat nav, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree HD camera and the full MG Pilot driver-assistance suite as standard. MG HS Trophy steps up with black leather- and suede-style upholstery, a panoramic opening sunroof, dual-zone air conditioning and an 8-speaker audio system.

Every new MG HS is covered by MG's 7-year or 80,000-mile warranty, fully transferable to subsequent owners. Hybrid and plug-in versions add an 8-year battery warranty. The current HS was tested by Euro NCAP in November 2024 and awarded five stars.

For many families the MG HS hybrid is the pragmatic middle choice: no cable, over 50mpg combined, and an automatic the entry petrol doesn't offer. Drivers who can charge at home will find the plug-in harder to beat; its 75-mile range covers a typical commuting week on battery alone.

New MG HS Interior

Inside, the MG HS car pairs twin 12.3-inch displays with full-width vents and a low, horizontal dashboard. One screen handles infotainment; the other is the 12.3-inch HD virtual driver display. Both come standard across SE and Trophy, a specification many rivals reserve for their top trims.

Those screens run the MG iSMART app ecosystem. You can lock and unlock the car remotely, pre-heat the seats before a frosty morning, and check fuel level, EV range and tyre pressures from your phone. Wireless charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB and sat nav are standard on every trim.

Step up to Trophy and the MG HS trophy interior swaps cloth for black leather- and suede-style upholstery, with an optional red interior at extra cost. Trophy also adds ventilated front seats, memory seats with electric lumbar support, dual-zone auto air conditioning, 8-speaker audio, sat nav with live services, and the panoramic sunroof.

Practicality is a genuine strength. Boot space measures 507 litres seats-up, expanding to 1,484 litres with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats down. Those figures hold consistent across petrol, Hybrid+ and plug-in versions. Plug-in cars also add Vehicle to Load (V2L), letting you draw mains-level power from the car for camping kit or power tools.

New MG HS Exterior

The second-generation HS adopts a longer, lower stance than the car it replaced. A black wide-open grille with chrome detail, slim LED headlights, and LED tail lights with a full-length light bar frame the body. The X-shape light signature at the front gives the HS a recognisable look at night.

Silver roof rails and 19-inch Blade alloys run across every version, keeping the look consistent whether you choose SE or Trophy. Plug-in cars add a side step, and rear privacy glass plus a rear spoiler are fitted range-wide. Follow Me Home headlights light your path from the car to the front door after dark.

Six colours are offered. Arctic Blue solid paint is included at no additional cost, with five metallic or tri-coat finishes available at extra cost: White Pearl, Black Pearl, Camden Grey, Cosmic Silver and Dynamic Red. Two-tone door mirrors are fitted on every colour except White Pearl and Black Pearl, which pair with single-tone black mirrors.

Camden Grey remains the most understated choice. Dynamic Red tri-coat arguably makes the sharpest case if you want the HS to stand out, working particularly well with the slim LED signature at the front and the full-length rear light bar.

MG HS Specifications and Trims

The MG HS is offered in two trim levels, SE and Trophy, both available on all three powertrains. Both are generously specified, so even entry SE is far from a stripped-back base car.

SE covers the 19-inch Blade alloys, LED headlights, sat nav, dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, a heated multifunction steering wheel, and keyless entry with push-button start. The full MG Pilot suite is also standard. Hybrid+ and plug-in SE cars add a driving mode selector; the plug-in SE also includes V2L and the side step.

Trophy builds on SE with leather- and suede-style upholstery, memory seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone auto air conditioning, the sunroof, front parking sensors, 8-speaker audio and live services. MG HS Engines and Performance

The new MG HS range offers three powertrains built around a 1.5T turbocharged petrol engine with Gasoline Direct Injection. MG HS mpg varies widely by powertrain, from 38.1mpg on the pure petrol to a weighted 705mpg on the plug-in hybrid. The petrol produces 169PS and 275Nm, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, with CO2 emissions of 168g/km.

The self-charging Hybrid+ pairs the same engine with a 1.8kWh nickel manganese battery and an electric motor for a combined 224PS and 340Nm. It uses a 2-speed automatic, covers 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, and returns 51.3mpg combined with CO2 from 126g/km. The battery tops itself up through regenerative braking and the engine, so you drive it like a conventional automatic that uses less fuel.

The latest-generation plug-in hybrid combines the engine with a 24.7kWh LFP battery for a combined 299PS and 350Nm, which cuts the 0-62mph sprint to 6.8 seconds. Up to 75 miles of electric-only range (WLTP combined) means drivers whose daily journeys stay under that figure can run on battery alone through a working week. That's a full working week of zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving.

A full charge from a 7kW home wallbox takes around 4.5 hours over the Type 2 connection; a 2.2kW three-pin socket needs around 7.5 hours. The weighted WLTP combined economy figure sits at 705mpg and 12g/km CO2, though real-world results depend on charging habits; the charge-sustaining figure is 48.7mpg and 131g/km. Braked towing capacity is 1,500kg across the range.
