Volkswagen has offered up a first glimpse of its latest ‘ID’ electric vehicle by revealing its next EV will be the new Volkswagen ID. Tiguan.
Set to replace the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5, the ID. Tiguan follows on from the recently launched ID. Polo and forthcoming ID. Cross as the latest familiar VW lines that will be brought into line with zero emission equivalents.
The importance of the ID. Tiguan cannot be overstated. The conventional fuel-powered Tiguan is currently VW’s best-selling model globally meaning this new version is will be a significant launch in the context of firm’s electric ambitions.
Like the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the new ID. Tiguan – which is being previewed wearing only light camouflage here - will clearly share a design DNA with its ICE-equipped namesake, but will adopt a softer, more contemporary overall look to ensure the two models can be differentiated.
Despite the distracting livery, it’s clear the ID. Tiguan will find a middle ground between the ruggedness of the existing Tiguan and the smoother appearance of the ID.4 it will succeed.
Set to rival the likes of the Ford Explorer – which is based on the same underpinnings as the ID.4 – the ID. Tiguan will likely mirror the approach of the ID. Polo by being understated, yet timelessly handsome. It’s a look that has been considered a signature of VWs over the years, but one arguably not reflected by the marque’s first wave of ‘ID’ badged EVs.
While VW is keeping the finer details of the ID. Tiguan – such as size, cabin space, interior design and electric range specifications – under wraps for now, we won’t have to wait long before the final version is revealed with a date in ‘early October’ pencilled in for the world premiere.
