Kia designed the Niro around a single idea: give family buyers one body style with the choice of three electrified powertrains, so the type of driving you do decides the car rather than the other way around. Self-charging Hybrid for buyers who want simple hybrid economy with no cable, Plug-in Hybrid for those who can top up at home, and the full Niro EV for anyone ready to go electric. That same body, same cabin, same practicality across all three powertrains makes a used Niro endlessly flexible.
The other reason to buy one second-hand is the warranty. Every Niro came with Kia's 7-year or 100,000-mile cover, including the hybrid, plug-in and EV battery packs, and because it transfers to each new keeper, a used Niro bought a few years old can still have several years of manufacturer warranty remaining. That is unusually long reassurance for a used family car.
Any remaining warranty transfers to you as the new keeper, and every Niro at Vertu is prepared and checked before it reaches the forecourt. For a used electrified compact crossover with a long warranty and real choice of powertrains, the Niro is hard to beat.
Yes, and the three-way powertrain choice means there is a Niro to suit most driving styles. The Hybrid pairs Kia's 1.6-litre GDi petrol with a 1.32kWh battery and electric motor for 139bhp combined, using a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic. It is self-charging, so there is nothing to plug in. The Plug-in Hybrid uses the same engine with a much larger 11.1kWh lithium-ion battery and more powerful motor for 180bhp combined and up to 40 miles of pure-electric range on a full charge.
The Niro EV goes all-electric, with a 64.8kWh lithium-ion battery and a 201bhp electric motor driving the front wheels through a single-speed automatic. On a full charge it offers up to 285 miles of WLTP combined range, and with a suitable DC fast-charger it can go from 10 to 80 per cent in around 43 minutes.
Earlier first-generation Niro cars from 2016 to 2021 are also plentiful on the used market, offering the same three-way choice of Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and e-Niro EV with slightly different battery sizes and ranges. Every used Niro sold by Vertu is checked before it reaches the forecourt as part of our used car preparation process, covering no outstanding finance, no history as a taxi, and no salvage or write-off record, plus a battery-system check on all powertrains. With that preparation and the remaining balance of Kia's long warranty, a used Niro is a low-risk family buy.
The Niro's three powertrains suit several kinds of buyer. The table below pairs four of them with the version that fits best.
| Buyer Type | Why the Niro Fits |
|---|---|
| Hybrid buyers who don't want to charge | The 139bhp Niro Hybrid is self-charging, pairing a 1.6-litre GDi engine with an electric motor and 6-speed DCT automatic for everyday efficiency with no charging cable needed. |
| Company car and plug-in drivers | The Niro Plug-in Hybrid's 11.1kWh battery delivers up to 40 miles of pure-electric range with very low CO2, making it a smart used choice for drivers who can charge at home or work. |
| EV-ready buyers wanting real range | The Niro EV's 64.8kWh battery delivers up to 285 miles of WLTP range with zero tailpipe emissions whilst driving, plus Vehicle-to-Device power for charging gadgets and appliances. |
| Families wanting long warranty cover | Kia's 7-year or 100,000-mile warranty, including the high-voltage battery, transfers to used owners, so a car bought a few years old can still carry years of manufacturer cover. |
The current Niro's party piece is how modern and uncluttered the cabin feels for its class. Higher-grade cars run twin 10.25-inch displays side by side: one for the digital driver cluster, one for the touchscreen with navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Below them, Kia's Multimode Controls panel switches between infotainment and climate controls with a tap, keeping the dashboard clean while giving you proper buttons when you need them. A shift-by-wire rotary dial sits where the gear lever used to be, freeing up centre console space for storage.
Practicality is a Niro strength. Rear seats fold with a lever on the backrest to open up to 1,445 litres of storage depending on powertrain, and the Niro EV adds a 20-litre "frunk" under the bonnet, ideal for charging cables and the Vehicle-to-Device adapter. Vehicle-to-Device itself is the EV's party trick: unlike most electric cars, the Niro EV can send power out, letting you plug in a vacuum, charge an e-bike, run a laptop or even power a coffee machine on a picnic. Higher grade cars also add a smart power tailgate and a sunroof.
Kia Connect comes free for seven years on current cars and brings connected services both in-car and through the Kia Connect smartphone app, including live traffic routing, charging station information, parking locations, remote door lock and unlock, and parked vehicle finder. Running costs are a Niro highlight: the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid are frugal, the EV is cheap to run from a home wallbox, and Kia's wide dealer network and strong parts supply keep servicing affordable. Once a Niro reaches Vertu it is inspected and prepared by our technicians before sale, including a battery-system check on all powertrains, and servicing it through Vertu's Kia-trained colleagues helps protect the warranty still in place.
The current Niro runs across three trims (badged 2, 3 and 4), with equipment stepping up at each level. The ladder is the same across Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and EV, so the trim decision is independent of the powertrain decision. The table below sets out how equipment builds across the range.
These details reflect the February 2023 brochure data for the second-generation Niro. The Niro has been sold across two generations, so used examples from the first-generation car (2016 to 2021) carry different trim names (initially 2, 3 and 4; later refreshed to 2, 3, 4 and 4+, with the first-generation EV badged e-Niro) and different equipment, so confirm the specification of any specific car with your local dealership.

*Equipment shown reflects the February 2023 brochure data for the second-generation Niro and is typical rather than guaranteed on any specific car. Some features vary by powertrain within the same grade (notably infotainment and parking sensors between Hybrid/PHEV and EV). Availability varies by model year, trim, powertrain and options fitted when new.
The current Niro is offered as a self-charging Hybrid, a Plug-in Hybrid or the fully electric Niro EV. The table below sets out the three options from the February 2023 brochure.
All three powertrains drive the front wheels and come with automatic transmission. The Hybrid and PHEV use a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic; the EV uses a single-speed reduction gear. Earlier first-generation Niros (2016 to 2021) offered a smaller 1.56kWh battery on the Hybrid, an 8.9kWh battery on the Plug-in Hybrid and either a 39.2kWh or 64kWh battery on the e-Niro EV.

*Figures are drawn from Kia's all-new Niro brochure (February 2023 data). The Hybrid is a self-charging full hybrid that never needs plugging in. The Plug-in Hybrid's electric-only range depends on wheel size (40 miles quoted on 16-inch wheels) and is heavily affected by charging habits, driving style and conditions. The EV's WLTP range depends on wheel size, climate and driving style. Earlier first-generation Niro models use different batteries and will differ.
| Dimension | Kia Niro |
|---|---|
| Body style | 5-door compact crossover SUV |
| Boot capacity (seats folded) | Up to 1,445 litres (varies by powertrain) |
| Niro EV front storage (frunk) | 20 litres (ideal for charging cables) |
| Rear seats | 60:40 split-folding bench with lever release |

*Dimensions reflect the second-generation Niro. The Plug-in Hybrid and Hybrid seats-up boot figures differ due to battery packaging, and earlier first-generation Niros are smaller overall. Confirm figures for a specific car with your local dealership.
