The Geely Starray EM-i is a mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV purpose-built from the ground up - not adapted from an existing platform, but engineered as a hybrid family SUV from conception.
It is the second Geely car to arrive on UK roads, following the all-electric EX5. Where that model established Geely UK as a credible electric vehicle contender, the Starray EM-i PHEV makes the case for Geely hybrid cars equally persuasively.
The Geely Starray combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined 262bhp, sent to the front wheels via automatic transmission. In everyday driving, the electric hybrid driving system prioritises the electric motor, drawing on the petrol engine to charge the battery or add power when needed.
The eight-year / 125,000-mile warranty on the Geely hybrid SUV and impressive combined WLTP range back that confidence on every journey - from the daily commute to long weekend runs.
Chassis tuning was handled in partnership with Lotus Engineering, whose involvement ensures the Starray delivers a refined driving experience tailored specifically to British roads.
The premium Starray EM-i interior immediately justifies the car's positioning - broad, airy, and genuinely spacious for a family of five.
A 13.8" head-up display (Max and Ultra trims) along with a 15.4" central infotainment screen (all trims) form the heart of the digital cockpit, helping you to navigate the digital functions with ease. Apple CarPlay and voice control are standard in the Starray, seamlessly connecting you with your everyday apps and contacts. The wireless charging, available from Max upwards, keeps devices topped up without the cables.
Front seats feature a multi-layer cushion design and come heated and electrically adjustable as standard. Upgrade to Max or Ultra and you gain ventilated seats with a driver memory function - welcome on longer, more ambitious commutes. A heated steering wheel along with other remote features come with the Max trim upwards.
As with other SUV car types of this kind, the Starray's generous boot (approx. 479 litres) handles school runs, shopping trips, and weekend getaways with ease. Split folding rear seats and ISOFIX points on the front passenger seat and rear seats make child seat fitting quick and secure.
The Max and Ultra trims add 256-colour ambient lighting, a panoramic roof and a 6 or 16-speaker premium sound system - details that grant the cabin a luxurious, comfortable atmosphere.
The Starray EM-i's modern SUV design takes a clean, confident approach - surfaces are smooth and purposeful rather than overwrought. The front fascia differs visibly from the EX5 (a Geely electric car), with daytime running lights forming distinctive brow-like accents above the lower-set LED headlights.
Flush door handles, a chiselled bonnet, and a wide stance enrich this Geely SUV with real presence on the road. The aerodynamic SUV design is practical as well as visual - the profile has been shaped to reduce drag and improve efficiency, saving fuel and prolonging travel.
All trims ride on 19-inch alloy wheels. The choice of body colours spans from solid white through to metallic options, though metallic paint carries an additional charge across all trim levels.
A powered tailgate on Max and Ultra trims and rain-sensing wipers across the range round off an exterior designed to impress on driveways and dual carriageways alike.
Three Geely Starray EM-i trim levels are offered in the UK: Pro, Max, and Ultra. The Pro and Max share an 18.4kWh battery, while the Ultra steps up to a 29.8kWh pack for greater electric range PHEV. The table below covers the key differences across comfort, technology, and warranty.

The Geely Starray EM-i uses a dual powertrain setup: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol electric hybrid system pairing a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. Together they produce up to 262bhp, delivered through the front wheels via an automatic transmission.
This is a plug-in hybrid SUV designed for flexible real-world use. The electric only driving PHEV mode allows silent, zero tailpipe emissions while driving on daily commutes. On longer runs, the petrol engine supplements the electric motor seamlessly, maintaining battery charge through regenerative braking and engine management.
The Pro and Max share an 18.4kWh battery, offering up to 51 miles of pure EV WLTP range and a combined range hybrid of over 600 miles (WLTP, with fully charged battery). The Ultra steps up to a 29.8kWh battery, extending electric range PHEV to up to 84 miles WLTP and combined range to approximately 618 miles.
DC charging on the Pro and Max reaches up to 30kW, taking the battery from 30-80% in around 40 minutes. The Ultra's fast charging PHEV capability rises to 60kW, cutting that window to approximately 16 minutes. Home charging hybrid via a wallbox or three-pin socket is supported across all trims, keeping home setup straightforward.
Multiple hybrid driving modes on this Geely vehicle give you control over how the powertrain behaves - prioritising electric propulsion in urban environments or managing low emissions hybrid output on longer travels. Lotus Engineering's chassis calibration ensures the whole experience remains composed and planted, regardless of mode.
