BMW has complemented the launch of the all-new BMW 3-Series by adding a new entry-level variant to its electric equivalent model, the BMW i3.
The new BMW i3 40 xDrive slots in below the existing i3 50 xDrive First Edition, which had been the only variant confirmed since the premium electric saloon was unveiled earlier this year.
It means the BMW i3 range will start at around £47,000, which represents a significant reduction from the £57,905 applied to the more powerful version.
Though equipped with a smaller 82.8kWh battery – compared with the 50 xDrive’s 112kWh unit – the new 40 xDrive is still a potent performer with 386bhp and 520Nm of torque on tap.
While the First Edition i3 made headlines with its class-leading 563-miles of range (WLTP combined), the new 40 xDrive will still go an impressive distance with 441-miles of range, according to BMW.
In addition to the i3 40 xDrive, BMW has confirmed a hotter i3 M60 version will also join the line-up featuring cosmetic M Performance upgrades and potentially boasting upwards of 600bhp.
Looking ahead, more affordable single motor variants are likely to be added in due course, while BMW has confirmed the next iteration of the iconic BMW M3 will come with electric power for the first time too.
