What to check when buying a used car?
When buying a used car, there are a few things you should check in order to make sure you are satisfied with it and that it will meet your expectations. This includes checking the exterior and interior for any signs of damage in the form of scratches, scrapes, dents, rust, corrosion, tears, rips, and holes, as well as making sure things like the tyres and windscreen wipers are in good working order.

What is the cooling-off period when buying a used car from a dealer?
The 'cooling-off' period refers to the time frame you have after buying a car to change your mind for whatever reason. This gives you the option to cancel your order after placing it and lasts for 14 days after you receive it. If you choose to cancel, you will be able to return the car to the dealership you purchased it from and receive a full refund.
What about the warranty when buying a used car?
It varies depending on the manufacturer. When you buy a used car, the warranty will be explained to you if the vehicle is still under a specific manufacturer's warranty. You should also be able to find information on the warranty in the documentation provided with your vehicle.
What are my rights when buying a used car?
If you are buying a used car, it's important to remember you have rights. According to Motors, there are several laws in place protecting you as the consumer, which are:
- Consumer Rights Act 2015 - This protects you in almost any purchase you make, including both new and used cars. The Act states that any car bought from an official dealer should be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. It also gives you the right to reject a vehicle within the first 30 days if it does not meet these standards, and for you to be given either a repair, replacement, or refund.
- Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 - Dealerships must comply with these regulations which prohibit them from unfair business practices, such as giving false information or insufficient information about the vehicle, acting aggressively in order to make a sale, failing to meet reasonable expectations of what is acceptable, and engaging in specific banned practices like claiming a vehicle will only be available for a limited time to make a sale.

How do I tax a second-hand car?
Taxing a second-hand car is the same as taxing a new one. The GOV.UK website sets out how to tax your vehicle, stressing that you must tax your vehicle even if you are exempt from paying road tax due to a disability, or driving an electric vehicle.
